## X Users Exploit Grok AI to Attempt 'Unblurring' of Redacted Faces in Epstein Files, Targeting Children
Following the US Department of Justice's release of 3.5 million pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, users on X have been attempting to use the AI chatbot Grok to 'unblur' or remove black boxes covering the faces of children and women in images. These redactions were implemented to protect the privacy of survivors and victims. Bellingcat's investigation identified more than 20 different photos and one video where users, by searching terms like 'unblur' and 'epstein' with the '@grok' handle, were actively trying to circumvent the redactions. The images in question show the visible bodies of children or young women with their faces obscured. This activity persists despite widespread condemnation from survivors. In a joint statement, 18 survivors criticized the document release for exposing their identifying information while their abusers remain protected. A prior batch of documents released on January 30 under the Epstein Files Transparency Act had to be taken down due to flawed redactions that compromised nearly 100 survivors. The current efforts target even correctly redacted images, posing a direct threat to victim anonymity and privacy.
